Beat Beat Beat was a German music programme that ran during the sixties. Not to be confused with the other well known German pop programme Beat Club, Beat Beat Beat was broadcast out of Frankfurt commencing in 1966. The programme ran to 26 episodes between its launch in 1966 and the final programme in January 1969, all of which are still in the German television archives. The shows were eclectic affairs and included performances by artists as diverse as Eric Burdon and the New Animals, The Move, Sam and Dave, Cat Stevens and Barry Ryan to name just a few.
This disc in the series of Beat Beat Beat releases features just one band: Eric Burdon and The New Animals. Eric Burdon had achieved massive worldwide success with the original Animals in 1964. By 1967 the original band had split and Eric, influenced by the new sounds coming out of America’s West Coast, formed the New Animals, which were more psychedelically inclined. The band performs five tracks including a cover of the song Morning Dew made famous by Tim Rose. Other songs include Trumpets Blow See See Rider and a harking back to the style of the older Animals with the John D Loudermilk song Tobacco Road and Road Runner. Rarely seen before this footage is not only historical but an amazing document of the times.
'And now, live from Frankfurt ....
Shot in front of a live studio audience these vintage individual
artists DVDs are superb, high quality documents of their era but with
the running time on each DVD clocking in at around the 15 minute mark
the question has to be asked - why not feature the material on further
volumes of The Best Of Beat Beat Beat ? Whatever. Taped in November
1965, the Kinks five song performance includes versions of their then
contemporary hits Til The End Of The Day and You Really Got Me.
Recorded 11 months later in October 1966 the Small Faces explosive
four song set includes perennial audience favourites All Or Nothing,
Whatcha Gonna Do About It and Shalalalalee. With Jimmy Page excelling
on guitar the Yardbirds appearance from March 1967 sees them
performing four titles including Over Under Sidweays Down, Shapes Of
Things and Happenings Ten Years Time Ago. Also from '67 come rootsy
takes on Tobacco Road, Roadrunner and CC Rider from Eric Burdon & the
New Animals who share their DVD with two tracks from Episode Six who
counted future Deep Purple vocalist and bassist Ian Gillan and Roger
Glover in their ranks. Other DVDs in the series feature the Hollies,
the Spencer Davis Group and Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich and the
Troggs.'
