Auburn - Indian Summer

Liz Lenten formed AUBURN in the summer of 1999. Their first gig was at the jam-packed launch party of Scarlet Records held at the salubrious and smoky Madame JoJo's in Soho to a completely packed and enthusiastic house. Their first EP Sweet Sebastian received extensive airplay and sold out of its limited pressing within 2 weeks. They then teamed up with producer Tim Pettit, (Travis, Sun House and Carlene Carter) and recorded For Life, which also got great radio support and the band toured UK and played many live radio sessions. The debut Album DREAMS was released in 2003 and AUBURN toured with SOPHIE ELLIS BEXTOR in UK and EUROPE, playing to 40,000 people. In 2005 CRY reach no 5 in the indie video charts after which they took a break concentrated on parenthood!

Since then Liz has continued to work as a vocal coach, artist manager, record label, songwriter and choral director. She was ‘SING UP’ (government's national singing campaign) lead facilitator/vocal advisor for Lincolnshire; has conducted the London Mozart Players Orchestra with the South Holland Choirs; written for and directed a 1000 voice kids choir for ‘Sing 66’ and manages several artists including award winning folk artist ELIZA CARTHY and New Yorker GALIA ARAD. Now, with Producer Max Gilkes, she has written and recorded a brand new album, INDIAN SUMMER, featuring special guests including ELIZA CARTHY & LAURA VANE and is looking forward to resurrecting AUBURN in 2012.

Review: Auburn reviewed track by track

Review by G. W. Hill

While the vocals on this album sound like rather Macy Gray, the music combines world music, symphonic elements and progressive rock along with some jazz. The mix is compelling and rather unique, and at times has some other sounds within it. All in all, this is quite an effective release and I like it quite a bit.

Track by Track Review
Shame on YouThere are world music elements here and the vocals have a real alternative rock vibe. Still, overall this is sort of an acoustic based energetic progressive rock.

StrongA similar, but more restrained vocal element is heard on this number. The music has more of a ballad-like sound to it. This is mellow and has some symphonic instrumentation over the top. It grows out with more layers of sound emerging as it continues.

Indian SummerWorld music merges with acoustic based progressive rock as the vocals work over the top. There is really a jazz-like concept to it.

Free SpiritClassical elements combined with world music bring this one into a mellow and acoustic based, soulful progressive rock mode.

Day Dreamin'Bouncy and fun, this is a tasty number. It’s got a real shuffling kind of rhythm and almost an island kind of feeling to it.

Stop the ClockMellow and slow, this is more ballad-like and certainly more of an organic progressive rock ballad. There are really some pretty elements in the overlayers here.

Too Far from HomeFolk music and country are both heard on this number. It’s probably not prog at all, but that’s OK. It’s one of the tastiest pieces of the whole set.

All Comes Back to YouBluesy and mellow, this is a cool cut. It’s another without a lot of prog in the mix, though. Still, it’s a great change of pace. There’s a cool guitar solo on this number.

This Is the LifeMoving back into proggy territory, this is a pretty balladic number. It’s gentle and intricate. It gets more powerful later in the piece and it might well be the strongest number of the whole set.

Review: AUBURN - a nice review

Auburn: Indian Summer

Indian Summer marks the return of UK based electro-acoustic act, Auburn. Their previous work, Dreams was released way back in 2003.
Auburn is led by vocalist/songwriter Liz Lenten. She co-wrote all the song with Max Gilkes and she took care of the lyrics. Her voice is pretty unusual, although fitting very well with the musical direction. She has a somewhat rough and sexy vocal tone with a sweet melodious edge. I would have called this release Summer Breeze myself rather than Indian Summer for it will come as a nice breath of fresh air to cool our hot summer days. This album is made of very easy compositions to listen to and will put the listener in an easy going mood. The music is quite varied though, while remaining very laid back as a whole. Auburn took inspiration from blues, jazz, soft rock, country and even reggae. On many of the ten tracks, one could hear acoustic guitars, violin, strong bass, percussions and the cool voice of Liz with male & female back vocals. My overall favorite tune is on position #2, "Strong". This great composition has the most beautiful melodic lines to be found on this album and a sweet relax vibe crafted by acoustic arpeggios, piano, strings , keyboards and back vocals. "Too Far From Home", has a definite country feel with its beat, acoustic and fiddle tones. Liz has put a comment on each song and for this track she mentioned: "I'm a country girl at heart". The following song, "All Comes Back to You" is the bluesy one to be enjoyed. As for the reggae times, one must select "Day Dreaming" and the closer, dub mix version of "Day Dreaming". Personally, I preferred the original version though.

So, Indian Summer is a very pleasant album to listen and it will put you in an even more pleasant laid back mood.
