Iona Biography
Iona was formed during the late eighties and released their self-titled debut album in 1990. The band covers a number of styles including Celtic, progressive rock, and even jazz and Christian elements. All the albums have received critical acclaim, as have Iona’s live performances over the years.
The mainstays of the band are Dave Bainbridge, Joanne Hogg and David Fitzgerald. Former Kajagoogoo bassist Nick Beggs was a one-time member although there have also been some high profile guests who have performed with the band on various albums over the years. These include King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and respected multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley.
Iona have released a number of well received and diverse albums covering a great many styles. These include the straight Celtic tinged progressive rock of the early self-titled album, to the more adventurous concept album The Book Of Kells.
More recently the band has been enjoying a break from touring and performing duties necessitated by vocalist Joanne Hogg taking time out to have a family. During this time Troy Donockley and Dave Bainbridge each released solo albums. Dave and Troy also collaborated with the recording of a live album in the grand confines of Lincoln Cathedral and have performed concerts together as far afield as Japan.
Late 2004 saw the band release their first DVD, which was a re-issue of an earlier video, entitled Iona. At this time a number of key albums were re-issued including Open Sky, Journey Into The Morn, Heaven's Bright Sun and the live album featuring an orchestra, Woven Cord. Iona also played its first concerts for almost three years and was filmed for a live DVD release to coincide with a studio album, released in 2005.
